Eagles Golfers Get Off to Strong Start

Eagles golfers play their only home tournament of the fall season Sept. 19- 20, where they hope to continue their strong showing at recent tournaments on their home turf.

The Eagles golf beginning at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20 at Oak Ridge Golf Club in La Salle, followed by Saturday’s tee time at 8 a.m. at Deer Park Country Club in Oglesby.

The Eagles have been competitive in the early season, including a tournament win on Sept. 6 at the Duane Chaney Invitational in Port Byron.

The team fired a season-low 302 and won the 11-team Chaney Invitational, which was hosted by Black Hawk College.

Spencer Marquez, a sophomore from Bureau Valley High School, led the Eagles with a 1 under par 70 and claimed the Invitational’s individual championship.

IVCC Men’s Golf Coach Sean Kennedy said, “ A terrific day for the Eagles and Spencer individually! It was very exciting for me to see all of my team’s hard work and efforts rewarded with a Tournament Championship. I am thrilled for my players and I hope all the talented area high school golfers see this and want to come help the Eagles win a few more!”

On Aug. 28, the golf team fought back and forced a 3-3 draw vs. the Southeastern Community College BlackHawks at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington Iowa.

Sophomore Devin Cook from St.Bede, Marquez and freshman Clay Wells from Fieldcrest High School all won Match Play points for the Eagles to help secure a draw.

Kennedy said, “It was rewarding to see Devin Cook step up in the final match and help the Eagles secure the draw. Even though we were unfamiliar with Spirit Hollow, we played pretty well on a difficult but fantastic venue.

“The freshmen are looking forward to returning next Fall and playing in the Top Tracer Challenge.”
