Eagles Women’s Soccer team won 2-1 vs. Kishwaukee College Aug. 22 in the team’s season opener.

Coach Rey Arteaga said every player had to step up to get the win.

“Honestly, the whole team did outstanding,” Arteaga said, “from our keeper (Mia Preciado) to our goal scorers (Mya Hewitt and Sabrina Poole).

“Our whole defense was very solid sending great passes with calm composure to our midfield who helped us to victory.”

Arteaga said he is hopeful for a good season this year as this marks the third year of the women’s soccer program at the college.

However, regardless of the wins and losses, Arteaga said one of his goals is to have the players work together as a team.

“We have such good chemistry, and some things matter more than just a few numbers which are life-long friends, great teammates, and a team who is willing to learn and adapt from myself as their coach,” Arteaga said.

The Eagles have four captains this year, including Mia Preciado, Mikayla Ferguson, Gessica Sperling, and Mya Hewitt.

Arteaga said he recruited mainly local players to keep a strong local fan base.

One out-of-district player for the Eagles is Hunter Zecca from Merrill, WI. However, Arteaga noted that Zecca has family from the area, which aided in her decision to come to IVCC.

The Eagles return to action at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6 with a home game vs. Triton. The Eagle’s games are played at LaSalle’s Rotary Park.
