This February, Illinois Valley Community College is bringing students and faculty together for a month of activities that celebrate Black history, culture, and accomplishments. The calendar has something for everyone on campus, from food and music to learning and fun facts.
From Feb. 2 to Feb. 27, the Student Life Space will have an exhibit on African Americans in higher education and STEM. The exhibit tells the tales of Black teachers, inventors, and pioneers whose work is still important in schools and science today.
The CTC Commons Area will have Black History Month Trivia on Feb. 10 and 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students may join in.
DJ Lee will be in the Student Life Space on Wednesday, Feb. 18, from noon to 1 p.m. to play Hip Hop History and Trivia. Students may play for prizes, listen to music, learn something new, and eat free pizza.
Professor Jeff Fesperman will give a discussion called “Race and Racism in Baseball” on Monday, Feb. 23, from 12:15 to 1 p.m. in Jacobs Library. People who can’t make it in person may join via Zoom.
The Soul Food Buffet will end the celebration on Wednesday, Feb. 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The buffet, which is free for students and staff, will be held in CTC-122. It’s a tasty way to highlight Black cooking traditions and bring people together.
The IVCC DEI Committee is in charge of this year’s Black History Month events, and the Student Activities Fund assists.
