Commencement moved to Saturday ceremony
April 26, 2012
IVCC’s commencement will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 19 in the gymnasium.
Students who have graduated in May 2011 and December 2011 are welcomed to participate along side students who will graduate in May 2012. It is not required for students to participate in the ceremony.
Commencement is being held on a Saturday for the first time this year.
Student focus groups and surveys were conducted after a drop in commencement participation, according to Tracy Morris, associate vice president for student services. The result was that students would prefer graduation on a Saturday.
Morris said that the ceremony will be available on a live stream for “those who can’t sit in bleachers or guests who have young children who want to be able to move around.” It will be available in Rooms C325-326 and on the internet.
Practice is slated for 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 17 in the main lobby.
According to the IVCC Web site, practice will last no longer than an hour and will be used to familiarize students with the event, how to line up, and to give the correct pronunciation of their names. Contact Morris at 815-224-0393 if you are not able to attend practice.
Retired English professor and student newspaper adviser Dr. Rose Marie Lynch is the speaker this year.
All students participating at commencement will receive tickets for seating their friends and family.
Gowns will be available from 4 to 8 p.m. May 16 in the shipping department.
