Honoring Their New Medium

On  Feb. 6, the director and choreographer of Musical Theatre at IVCC, Don Grant Zellmer, announced the college’s spring production, a musical revue entitled “Hooray for Hollywood – The Music of the Movies.” The revue will highlight movie musicals from Hollywood’s golden age, primarily the large line up of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer classics, such as “The Wizard of Oz,” “Singin’ in the Rain,” and “Top Hat.”

It will feature a talented group of students, alumni, and community members (age 17+). The performance will be presented virtually, via the IVCC Fine Arts Youtube Channel. Given that the IVCC Theatre Department has turned to film as an alternative form of producing content, it seems appropriate that they are highlighting the area in which the two art forms meet.

Similar to the department’s last two virtual productions, Terror in the Aisles and Cool Yule: The Big Fat Holly Jolly Covidian Christmas Special, the spring production will utilize green screen technology to create an immersive experience for viewers, recreating classic sets and designs from the films they are paying homage to.

The release date of the show has not yet been announced, but will take place between the months of March and April. For more information, visit the IVCC Fine Arts Facebook Page.

Until conventional performances are deemed safe, the IVCC Theatre Department will continue to find innovative ways to engage with their audience and give students, alumni, and community members a creative outlet. IVCC hopes to return to live theatre in the fall of 2021.
