Most of us take the modern streaming landscape for granted. You pay somewhere between $5 and $15 for a membership to any of the large streaming goliaths like Disney, Hulu, Netflix, and amazon prime. For a small fee you can have access to any of the Netflix originals and Amazon exclusives out this season, or a large variety of cult classics like twin peaks, Fraiser, Seinfeld, and friends. It is understood that access is restricted to those that do not pay a monthly subscription fee. But what about services that allow you to purchase content to own like Vudu, and Steam. It turns out that you do not own that content that you bought, well then what did you buy? Companies like Steam and Vudu sell not the content you watch but a permit to watch or play that content as many times as you want if the terms of service are not broken. It comes as increasingly more streaming companies are announcing changes to their platforms. This trend could cause services to increase in pricing or allow advertisements to play on lower tier subscription models.
