February is the recognition and celebration of Black History Month, with activities sponsored by Student Activities, the campus Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee (DEI), and Jacobs Library. One event is planned for every week throughout the month of February.
Amanda Cook Fesperman, professor of Political Science and History, coordinator of International and Multicultural Education, and coordinator of Study Abroad program, said, “Throughout the month of February, there will be a slide show presentation in the Student Life Space, featuring African American leaders in education and STEM.”
Throughout the month of February, Jacobs Library will have a Black History Month display in the front of the Academic Support Center (ASC), featuring black authors and influential stories.
David DJ Lee, known as “Rockababyrock” on instagram, will be making another guest presentation this year at IVCC. DJ Lee is a beatboxer, singer, songwriter and producer hailing from Nashville, Tennessee.
Cook Fesperman said, “DJ Lee will be returning to campus with his very popular program on how hip-hop and rap music made its way into popular culture.”
From noon until 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 3, in the Student Life Space, Lee will present How Hip-Hop Got to the Suburbs. Activities include free pizza, “How Hip-Hop Are You?” trivia game, and a Q&A session with Lee.
From 12:20 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 13., in the Student Life Space, Dr. Amira Davis will present The Chicago Black Renaissance. The presentation is sponsored by the IVCC DEI Committee and free pizza will be provided.
“Dr. Davis holds a Ph.D. in Educational Policy Studies with a concentration in African American Studies. She has been speaking and performing for 35 years. The Chicago Black Renaissance will be interactive and include the shared migration stories from audience members,” stated Cook Fesperman.
The Soul Food Buffet is open to all IVCC students and staff and is tentatively planned to take place on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Students can check IVCC social accounts for updates.
From 12:20 p.m to 1:20 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 25, in the Student Life Space, “Professor Jeff Fesperman will give a presentation on The History of Race and Racism in Baseball. Free pizza will be provided,” said Cook Fesperman.
