Illinois Valley Community College has several events planned for Women’s History Month which kicks off in March.
Tuesday, March 5 from noon to 1 p.m. in CTC 124-125 there will be a Brown Bag Lunch. Join Heather Steele of Safe Journeys for a discussion on how “Gender-Based Violence Thrives in Crisis,” as she compares the hypothesized violence found in “Parable of the Sower”, IVCC’s One Book, One College selection, with real-world violence caused by global conflicts and crises, especially sexual and domestic violence and the human trafficking of girls and women.
Wednesday, March 20 from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m. in CTC 124-125 there will be a Brown Bag Panel Discussion. Professor Amanda Cook Fesperman and Professor Kimberly Radek-Hall will host a discussion of the meanings and interrelationship of Feminism and Fascism, as well as a Few Further F words.
Thursday, March 21 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in CTC 124-125 there will be a Brown Bag Lunch. There will be a collaborative staff and student presentation, “Intersectionality and Impact: Notable Women in Disability History,” which will provide a brief overview of disability rights history while sharing both achievements of and continued challenges for females with disabilities.
Tuesday, March 27 at 6 p.m. there will be a Zoom Book Club Discussion. Join members of the Student Advocating Gender Equality (SAGE) and the Zonta Club of LaSalle-Peru Area online for a discussion of IVCC’s current One Book, One College selection, “Parable of the Sower” by Octavia E. Butler.
Thursday, March 28 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in CTC 124-125 there will be another Brown Bag Discussion. Join IVCC Instructor Kayla Greenwell in this discussion, where she will introduce attendees to the growing number of female voices in sci-fi and fantasy from the 1950s until today and uncover the subversive nature of the genre.
IVCC’s Women’s History Month Celebration is made possible through the combined dedication of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee; SAGE, the Golden Z Club of the Illinois Valley; One Book, One College; and IVCC faculty and staff.
All events are free and open to the public.
