Former IVCC student Alexandria R. Davis was fatally shot in Ottawa on Feb. 19. She was 20 years old.
Police were called to the 1100 block of Post Street at 11 a.m. Sunday morning after receiving a report of a gunshot wound. Authorities have determined that the incident did not involve foul play, but was rather a tragic accident with a firearm.
Davis died after being taken to OSF St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Ottawa.
According to the IVCC Dental Assisting Program, Davis was a “star student,” graduating with a 4.0 GPA after earning a certificate in Expanded Functions and in Coronal Scaling, and passing her Certified Dental Assistant Exam.
Davis also received praise for her interships at Dr. Shawn Sydlowski and Alliance Dental Group in 2021.
Heather Seghi, the Dental Assissting Program Coordinator, spoke of Davis’ legacy.
“Lexi was a brilliant student with the potential for absolute greatness,” she said. “Her passing is a great loss for anyone that has ever met her, and those she had yet to meet.”
In honor of Davis’ memory, the Dental Assisting Program has created a scholarship for IVCC students pursuing a career in dental assisting or dental hygiene. This scholarship, called The Lexi Davis Memorial Scholarship, will award $500 to one or more students each year.
Seghi said, “Lexi had a bright spirit and will be truly missed by IVCC and the Dental Assisting faculty.”
