March is shaping up to be a big month for blockbusters. In fact, a franchise film will be released nearly every week.
“Dune: Part Two” will kick off the month with a bang on March 1.
I hope the sequel can live up to “Dune” (2021), which had epic visuals and a compelling plot that honored its source material.
The first film also had an impressive cast, which is only growing, as talented actors like Florence Pugh and Christopher Walken will appear in the second part.
“Kung Fu Panda 4” hits the big screen the following week on March 8.
Fans have been waiting eight years for the next installment in this successful DreamWorks franchise, so expectations are high.
I hope the movie can appeal to young viewers who are new to the series, as well as older ones who grew up with the first three entries.
DreamWorks just proved this balance is possible with “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” their most recent chapter in the world of “Shrek.”
“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” will release two weeks later on March 22.
In 2021, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” resurrected the series with new characters, while the original Ghostbusters were relegated to cameos. My favorite scenes were the few shared by the new and old characters.
The trailers for “Frozen Empire” seem to promise an increased presence for the iconic actors who started the franchise. I look forward to seeing more interaction between the new Ghostbusters and the pros this time around.
Finally, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” stomps into theaters on March 29.
This is the fifth movie in the MonsterVerse, a series of fun, action-packed, and admittedly shallow movies starring classic kaiju.
King Kong made his MonsterVerse debut in “Kong: Skull Island,” which struck a perfect balance between horror and humor. Unfortunately, the balance has been off ever since, with each entry being goofier and less scary than the last.
If the trailer is any indication, it seems “Godzilla x Kong” will continue the trend. Nevertheless, I will be seated in the theater on opening weekend.
The first two months of 2024 haven’t been great when it comes to films. However, this March lineup has me excited about returning to the movies.
