Statewide group will address LGBT ussyes

Austin burnette, IVCC Student Trustee

Hello, IVCC students! I hope you are all doing well and staying on top of your coursework. Now that everyone is adjusting (or re-adjusting) to college life, it is a great time to get involved on campus.
At Spirit Day, I hope everyone took the opportunity to see the myriad of clubs and organizations sponsored at IV, and perhaps even to find inspiration for a good use of your time. The more active our campus is, the better and more fun it is for all of us.
In early September, I had the opportunity to attend the Illinois Community College Board Student Advisory Committee, which is composed of all the student trustees across the state. Our sole goal is to make community colleges, Illinois, and the world better for students.
This year, we have been challenged to be inspired and to aim for the stars, to be loving, hopeful, and optimistic in catalyzing change. September’s meeting was a reorganization meeting where I was assigned to the Finance and Local Issues Committees, so now more than ever is the time to approach me with the issues that affect you at IVCC, no matter how big or small.
We at SAC will be working diligently to fix as many issues as we possibly can, and I am confident that the leadership team we elected is ambitious and relentless in fighting for students throughout Illinois.
At our next meeting, we will be discussing anti-LGBTQ sentiments on college campus and the issues facing LGBTQ college students.
Other topics for the year include campus sexual assault, community college funding at the state level, and more. Suggested discussion topics range from granting student trustees the right to vote on board matters (currently our votes are not counted) to helping acclimate veterans into higher education.
Good luck with the rest of your semester!
